When I think of Negros Oriental, the first thing that comes to mind is the feeling. There are so many reasons why this place holds a special place in my heart.
What makes it stand out is the landscape, the community, the slow-paced towns that feel like home, and the many destinations it has to offer. There’s always a reason why adventures happen every time I arrive on this island.
This island was my summer home growing up. The typical provincial aspects, from fiestas to large family gatherings, always made me feel warm.
So, what makes this place a must-visit destination for travelers? All I can say is that there are so many sites you should visit. Swimming at the beautiful beaches, sightseeing while trekking or hiking, and enjoying local restaurants are what make Negros Oriental exciting.
Here are the Must-Go Places in Negros Oriental
Dumaguete
The capital of Negros Oriental holds a name rooted in history. Derived from the Cebuano word dagit, meaning “to snatch,” the city’s name reflects its history of pirate raids and its enduring ability to captivate visitors. Over time, Dumaguete evolved from a coastal settlement into the vibrant city it is today.
The city boasts a reputation as a premier educational hub, with four universities. Among these institutions is the renowned Silliman University, the first American university in Asia and this country’s first Protestant university.
There are so many activities to do in this city, such as shopping, trying out different restaurants like the iconic Sans Rival, and strolling along Rizal Boulevard. This city has so much charm, and the people I met here showed that this is truly "The City of Gentle People."

San Jose
Just 20 minutes from the city, San Jose is a small town that shows the beauty of simplicity. Its coastal barangays—Sra. Ascion, Sto. Niño, Poblacion, Tapon Norte, Jilocon, and Tampi—are home to vibrant marine ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs. Notably, Barangay Tapon Norte has thicker mangrove stands compared to others like Jilocon and Tampi.
Home to the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park, it’s an ideal spot for nature lovers to kayak, hike, or simply enjoy the views of the lake and hills. This small community always has something special.

Whenever I stayed here, my home base was at Wuthering Heights B&B by the Sea (formerly known as Wuthering Heights Beach Resort). I noticed that time felt like it was slowing down.
Looking at the view while passing through the highway, relaxing at the beach, and being included in family gatherings are what make this town special for me.
With its warm community and lush landscapes, San Jose offers a refreshing escape from the fast-paced city life.
Bais
Bais is a great destination for marine lovers. Known for its dolphin watching tours, this coastal town is perfect for eco-tourists. Take a boat trip to spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat or head to the Manjuyod Sandbar, for its white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re kayaking, exploring the sandbar, or simply enjoying the view, its scenery is the perfect landscape for fun memories.
Mabinay
Located at the heart of Negros Oriental, Mabinay is a must-visit destination for cave explorers and nature lovers. As the “Cave Capital” of the Philippines, it offers a variety of caves worth exploring.
Aside from its caves, Mabinay is also an ideal spot for those who want to immerse themselves in rich flora and fauna. Whether you're passing through the coastal roads of Negros Oriental or specifically seeking an escape into nature, Mabinay offers the perfect blend of adventure and stunning landscapes.
Pamplona
Pamplona offers natural beauty, with rolling hills and lush farmlands. For adventure seekers, experience trekking and taking a dip at Palaypay Falls, a sulfuric waterfall 12 kilometers from the town center in Barangay Abante. The falls are fed by rivers from the Sibulan mountains, making it a popular attraction.
